Bocce Court Project

With YOUR help we have reached our initial funding goal!

In partnership with Friends of Baker Park and the City of Frederick, and with YOUR HELP… we plan on breaking ground Fall 2021, building four permanent bocce courts in Baker Park across from the iconic Carillon (Bell Tower).

We are still seeking donations for a few more benches! There are also engraved pavers available for donations of $150 or more.

Thank you for your support.

Thank You! to all of the local businesses and individuals who have already donated. You are helping to get Frederick County “off of the couch and into the park”.

Everyone is Welcome!

Depending on Covid-19 restrictions, we might play this Summer on the grass.

Bocce is a game for all ages and skill levels. It’s social. It’s fun. It’s free… and it’s easy to learn!

Usually we play on Sunday (weather dependent) from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Potential Business Opportunity

The US Bocce Federation is seeking an indoor facility in the Mid-Atlantic region capable of hosting National and International tournaments. Indoor bocce facilities are often constructed as part of a restaurant or brewery and are used to drive traffic to those facilities.

This Methuen, MA facility hosts tournaments that draw hundreds of elite bocce players from around the world. Click here to see more photos and additional information…

profile "Bocce, sometimes anglicized as bocci, is a ball sport belonging to the boules family, closely related to British bowls and French pétanque, with a common ancestry from ancient games played in the Roman Empire. Developed into its present form in Italy (where it is called bocce, the plural of the Italian word boccia which means 'bowl' in the sport sense), it is played around Europe and also in overseas areas that have received Italian migrants, including Australia, North America, and South America (where it is known as bochas, or bolas criollas ('Criollo balls') in Venezuela, bocha in Brazil). Bocce was initially played among the Italian migrants but has slowly become more popular with their descendants and the wider community." From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Bocce Rules

There are "tournament rules" and there are "backyard rules". We play by what are called “open rules”. Basically, the smaller jack ball is thrown and then each team takes turns trying to roll their balls closest to it. Check out the video "How to Play Bocce" by Major League Bocce for a simple, entertaining explanation of the rules.
One of the reasons that we love the game is that Bocce can be played by all age groups and is wheelchair friendly – making it a sport that is open to just about everyone!
