Bocce Court Project

Thanks to your generosity, the support of Friends of Baker Park, a grant from the State of Maryland, and the tireless effort of the 15-member Bocce Steering Committee… we have raised over $125,000 for the materials to build the bocce venue in Baker Park!

The Bocce Courts are now open to the public!

The City of Frederick Recreation Department’s four bocce courts are located in Room 1 of Baker Park.

When not reserved, the courts are available on a first come basis.  Players must limit play to 1.5 hours if other players are waiting.  The reservation schedule and the bocce court rules/policies are located here.

Bocce ball equipment is available to the public at no charge. To check out a bocce ball set, go to the lower level of the William R. Talley Recreation Center located at 121 N Bentz Street, Frederick, MD.

Spring / Summer 2022…

To complete the project:

  • Low safety fencing will be installed around the courts
  • A walkway to access the venue from College Ave. will be built

Follow the Frederick Bocce Club’s Facebook page for updates on the following:

  • Wednesday night bocce league from 6PM to 8PM.
  • Bocce pickup games hosted by the Club most Sunday nights. These are free and open to the public. No experience or equipment required.

Thank You!

Friends of Baker Park is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, volunteer-staffed community service organization dedicated to fostering community involvement in the preservation, restoration, use, and maintenance of Baker Park.

The 15-member Bocce Steering Committee was created in January 2018 under Friends of Baker Park to raise funds to build the bocce venue. With the construction of the bocce venue nearly complete, the Steering Committee’s work is nearly done, and the bocce venue will be open to the public.

Thank You! to all of the local businesses and individuals who have already donated. You are helping to get Frederick County “off of the couch and into the park”.

Everyone is Welcome!

Potential Business Opportunity

The US Bocce Federation is seeking an indoor facility in the Mid-Atlantic region capable of hosting National and International tournaments. Indoor bocce facilities are often constructed as part of a restaurant or brewery and are used to drive traffic to those facilities.

This Methuen, MA facility hosts tournaments that draw hundreds of elite bocce players from around the world. Click here to see more photos and additional information…

profile "Bocce, sometimes anglicized as bocci, is a ball sport belonging to the boules family, closely related to British bowls and French pétanque, with a common ancestry from ancient games played in the Roman Empire. Developed into its present form in Italy (where it is called bocce, the plural of the Italian word boccia which means 'bowl' in the sport sense), it is played around Europe and also in overseas areas that have received Italian migrants, including Australia, North America, and South America (where it is known as bochas, or bolas criollas ('Criollo balls') in Venezuela, bocha in Brazil). Bocce was initially played among the Italian migrants but has slowly become more popular with their descendants and the wider community." From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Bocce Rules

photo by Brecken Pool via flickr (CC)

There are "tournament rules" and there are "backyard rules". We play by what are called “open rules”. Basically, the smaller jack ball is thrown and then each team takes turns trying to roll their balls closest to it. Check out the video "How to Play Bocce" by Major League Bocce for a simple, entertaining explanation of the rules.
One of the reasons that we love the game is that Bocce can be played by all age groups and is wheelchair friendly – making it a sport that is open to just about everyone!
